There are those days where some classes are more boring than others. Today was one of those days. I've learned a lot already about psychoanalysis, Marxist psychoanalysis, suturing, and the mirror theory. I couldn't handle it today. I just wanted to zone out. And I would for awhile. Then I'd zone back in and pretend to take notes but instead actually draw random figures on my paper. Then I'd zone out again. Then in. Then out. Then I'd start texting Brittany random questions. Then I'd zone in for a bit while I thought of new things to text Brittany and then I'd zone out. Then I started thinking about what I could text my mom...
I'm telling you, being bored can lead you to do some pretty crazy things.

Broadway

Music is a powerful thing. It can make people laugh or move people to tears. I was witness to such an emotional event today. The musicians knew what they were doing. The piano playing, the singing: all of it was absolutely amazing. As they were performing I looked around the room. People were wiping tears from their eyes.
The musical number for Ward Conference was very well done.

Faced with a crisis
3/27/2010
You've got to be kidding. I had thirteen minutes to get downtown. And it was vital that I made it. I would have been fine IF the F/V subway would have been working. But I didn't realize it had been closed for the weekend.
Here I was having to take the F/V uptown to 34th Street and then downtown to West 4th. There was no way. But there was nothing else I could do. I waited patiently on the platform.
One minute passed.
Two minutes passed.
Three minutes.
There was no sign of the subway even coming.
I had seven minutes to get there. They were waiting for me.
There was nothing else to do. I bolted out of the subway to hail a taxi. Taxis kept passing. One stopped but was only going uptown. I crossed the street. Finally a taxi stopped. "West fourth and sixth avenue."
I checked my phone. I had four minutes.
He raced down the streets of Manhattan.
"This is fine," I said as I threw the driver a bill. "Keep the change."
I ran across the street. Hopefully I wouldn't walk in making a scene even though I was a few minutes late.
I held my breathe as I walked in...
The previews were still going.
I made it.

I love to see the Temple
I made it to the Temple today. It has been awhile and was much needed.
When I got there the guy checking the recommends said I had only five minutes. I believed him only for a second as I had met him before in similar circumstances. I knew I had a good fifteen. Plenty of time.
As I was walking in, though, he stopped me. He asked if I had forgotten something. I went through my mental list of things: recommend, check. He had already given it back to me and it was back in my wallet. Money: check. I hadn't taken out anything else from my purse so I was fine.
"I don't think I'm forgetting anything."
"A husband?"
Ahhh... It made sense.
"I don't have one yet," I winked as I walked by.

Karma
I was faced with a moral dilemma today but both the moral and dilemma were fleeting as I resolved them.
The dilemma: I went to get some food for lunch and asked my boss and another coworker if they wanted something. I knew my boss would say no and I assumed my coworker would say no because my other coworkers always say no. But she said yes. And I had no desire to get her anything.
The moral: I did end up getting her something. Shortly after, my boss left to get some lunch for herself and when she came back she said she saw Ted Danson.

Tuesday
Mondays and Tuesdays tend to run together this semester. Mondays I'm at work all day until class at night. I have about an hour to wind down before I go to bed just to be at work the next morning around 8. Following that, I have class until about 6. Needless to say, come Tuesday nights, I'm happy the day is over.
It is Tuesday night. I'm happy today is over :)

Comfort Food
There is nothing like ending your day with your favorite food or beverage. Mine has become Starbucks' Peppermint Hot Chocolate. And I happen to know the closest five locations to my house. I also happen to know when they each close. Today took me to Union Square, one of the only Starbucks open until 11 pm. The rest in the surrounding area close at 10 pm which means I'd have to leave class early to even make it before it closes. Wait, why haven't I just done that instead of going to a farther Starbucks? Hmmmmm...

Babysitting
We had a Relief Society activity where we babysat kids from the family wards so that their parents could attend a temple session. This was done in the cultural hall at the Lincoln Center chapel where the temple is located. My job consisted of me playing basketball, learning a very valuable lesson that if that is what it is like to be a mom then I should invest in several more sports bras.
Spring Break is over. At last.
3/19/2010
Today my Spring Break officially ended. I couldn't be happier. I really do love my job but working full time really isn't all that it's cracked up to be. A career: whatever! I choose the student life.
Speaking of, I have a midterm due on Monday that I haven't started. Well, I have thought about thinking about it so that's got to be something.

"Jim"
"Jim" shaved off his goatee. He looks very nice. However, I found out today that he is slightly shorter than I am. I usually see him sitting at his desk. But today we ran into each other. Literally. I turned the corner the same time he did. Needless to say, I got a good view of his head.
Festive Spirit
3/17/2010
It is true. I want a tattoo. Well, two actually. In fact, I want them so badly that I draw them often to at least satiate the desire.
Today was extra special though because it was a holiday. Today's tattoo was drawn in green. I purposefully didn't wear green so that I could have that be my only "festive" attire.
I told Brittany and here was our texting for the day:
Brittany: Just get the tattoos! I would totally support you on this!
Ashley: Ha! Seriously, I'm at least making a stencil so then I can do it whenever AND I can change the color accordingly :)
Brittany: Ohhhh, that is a good idea! You can make one for the "Shhhhh", too! Stencil-the tattoo without the permanent!
Here is my "stencil-the tattoo without the permanent". (Yes, that is my finger and yes, that is a moustache. I want to have one on the inside of my left index finger so I can hold it up to my face and have a moustache)

Daylight Savings Part II
When I left work today the sun was still out. I even left work later than usual. I might have disliked the time change Sunday morning but tonight I quite enjoyed it.

Spring Break!!!
It is officially Spring Break! What does that mean then? Oh, it means I'm working more than when I'm in school... I haven't had a technical Spring Break since who-knows-when so I had no comprehension to actually schedule a break. Well, I thought about it but it was too late. See, my boss asked me to work full-time this week as I won't be dealing with school. I'm actually fine with it as I really enjoy my job. But it isn't a break.
What I should have done was leave town like my three coworkers. There are only five of is in the office. The last two were my boss and I. Because they left my boss hired a temp. Her name is Kate. I call her temp. She is great. She does all the jobs that I don't like to do. I like temps.

Daylight Savings
Apparently it was daylight savings today. Good thing my phone changed the time automatically. I realized this at 1:59 am when I was looking at my phone while in bed and all of a sudden it changed to 3:00 am. It was weird. I mean, why was I in bed at at 3:00 am on a Sunday morning?
A View From the Bridge-Seat SR 10
3/13/2010
Today I went to see A View From the Bridge with Scarlett Johansson and Liev Schreiber. Scarlett Johansson isn't my favorite but she was decent. Liev Schreiber, on the other hand, was amazing! It was really well done.
The best part was my seat number: SR 10. For those familiar with theatres, SR = Standing Room. Yes, I stood for two hours while watching the play. It was definitely worth the price.
Here is the stage. The lady facing the camera was making me laugh. She made it very clear that everyone must be seated and all cell phones must remain turned off. I obviously didn't listen.

Iron men in New York
3/12/2010
I was watching the news (surprise!) while I was at the gym the other day (surprise!) and I noticed a story about iron statues of men placed on top of buildings in various locations throughout the Flatiron district. To my amazement, when I left the gym today I noticed that one was placed right around the corner from my apartment.
Proof:
I guess the police were on alert for any calls from concerned citizens afraid that someone was about to jump off the roof.
Article on the statues from the Huffington Post:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/alex-palmer/iron-men-take-to-new-york_b_490750.html
Amber's response to the story: You would think that if there are 31 statues of men placed around the city then they would have been put in Chelsea...

Post Office run, again
I had to make, yet again, another run to the post office. But Terry wasn't there! I was very distraught. Terry, I missed you today!

"Jim"
So, there's this guy at work... I've actually never spoken to him (and I doubt I ever will). I have given him the name "Jim" because he is like Jim Halpert from The Office. Well, I guess the only way he reminds me of Jim Halpert is 'cause he works on the same floor and I walk by his office all the time... He doesn't look like Jim at all and he certainly doesn't act like him. Nonetheless, I think I managed to give him a smile last week. But he wasn't in today. I missed him. The awkwardness when he is around was lacking today...

Madison Square Park
I couldn't let a beautiful day go by without visiting the park. Today is the most ideal weather day that I have experienced in New York. I decided to work on a paper at the park next to my apartment. The photo cannot give justice to the gorgeous day it really is (in fact it makes it look really ugly...) but it is a beautiful day in Manhattan with the Flatiron building in view. I'm sharing the park with those enjoying the weather reading or talking to friends and family on the phone. And with the sounds of the city, it is a quintessential New York moment.
*Today's post is brought to you by Madison Square Park and the free Internet that the park provides, hence why this post is so much earlier than past posts.
(A squirrel just ran past me and scared me. I jumped a little.)

Trader Joe's
I love Trader Joe's. Just not everyone else who decides to go the same time I do. But, if you go with another person it always makes it easier. One of you stands in line while the other grabs the food. It is brilliant!
*I hope I haven't done a Trader Joe's blog before. If I have, I apologize :)

Eat, read, and sleep movies...
I had a very interesting dream last night. An excerpt from an email about my dream that I sent to Brittany (all names have been changed to protect the innocent):
"Twin B" and I were literally in a movie. I want to say it was Deja Vu but with The Time Traveler's Wife in there somehow. "She" was in the past and I was in the present. Or maybe "she" was in the future and I was in the present or something. Anyways, we knew what was going to happen but "she" had to try and stop it. I knew the whole time (me as in an audience watching the movie) that it would turn out fine because movies do. But at one point I was talking to "her" on the phone when "she" is in the past or future and then the line goes silent and I yell out (me as in the character) "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" 'cause this was the climax and my character didn't know if "she" was alive or not. But, me as in the spectator knew "she" was alive. And then me, as in reality, woke up.
"She" then sent the email to her coworkers.

OCS*: An honorary post to Brittany
Since Brittany won't start her own blog, I decided to do an honorary blog for her tonight.
I was on the phone with Brittany this evening. She was telling me that a doctor diagnosed her today with a mild form of OCD. For those that know Brittany, this is not surprising.
The shock came, however, when, while talking, she blurts out, "oh no!" I didn't know what happened. She then sent me this picture. She caught herself in the act.
*OCS: Brittany sent me the picture via email. The subject was OCS. It was obviously a misspelling of OCD. I mentioned to her that she spelled it incorrectly. Her response: Don't tell me that. If you do I'll make you send the email back to me so I can fix it!

Sleeping Beauty
Here is a conversation Brittany and I had through text today. It begins with me expressing my level of exhaustion:
Ashley: So sleepy...
Brittany: Find Snow White?
Ashley: What? That is oddly funny even though I don't get it... Ha!
Brittany: With that comment you are apparently not Sleepy but rather Dopey.

Class got out early today. We watched Carl Dreyer's 1928 Passion of Joan of Arc. FYI - she was burned at the stake at the end of the film.
After the movie ended our professor wanted to know if we had any questions. In reality, though, he just wanted us to leave because he was tired. He said, "so, unless any of you have some burning questions..." We all groaned. Based on his facial expression there was no pun intended. We all laughed at his sincerity.
Good one Professor Allen.
